Hotel Magic, Andorra la Vella (4 stars)

Rooms: 140, Telephone: +376 876 900

Opened in 2003, the Magic is convenientally located for both the business and shopping areas of la Vella. Turn right outside the hotel and within 5 minutes you come across a good choice of restaurants. The Pyrenees department store is also along this road plus a couple of others for some of the lowest priced items in Western Europe.

The rooms are spacious, and have balconies (overlooking the river at the front). Good hot and cold buffet breakfast, plus evening restaurant, lounge and bar, situated on the third floor. Well stocked mini-bar. TV stations are Andorran, French and Spanish with CNN so far the only English speaking channel. Helpful reception staff.

Four minutes walk from the bus station (if arriving by car, try to park directly outside the main door as you can then reverse up after dropping your bags off to the car park – 18 Euros a day – or you will need to go round the one way system again).

In our opinion the best value good hotel in Andorra la Vella.

Aparthotel, Anyos Park (3 stars)

Telephone: + 376 836 770

Anyos is near to La Massana and a popular area with people who move to Andorra full time. But you really do need a car to get out and about if you stay at the Anyos Park Aparthotel, whereas with la Vella and La Massana you don't.

Located near the Pal-Arinsal skiing, the aparthotel offers more room than a standard hotel, and is ideal for families as one and two bedroom apartments are available, both with a lounge and kitchen. Overall well run, comfortable, and can work out cheaper than conventional hotels.

Rutllan, La Massana (3 stars)

Telephone: + 376 835 000

Good location for skiing and easy access via bus or car to the capital la Vella. Good size rooms and comfortable. If booking and you have a choice ask for a room at the rear of the hotel as the front rooms can be quite noisy from the traffic. The staff can be an odd mixture of helpful, friendly – and cold, aloof. The breakfast isn't anything to write home about, and skip the restaurant in the evening. Good well stocked public bar.

Hotel Himalaya, Soldeu (4 stars)

Telephone: +376 878 515

Superbly located in Andorra's premier ski resort of Soldeu. Has a spa, but it isn't the best. Designed with the skier in mind, and can be friendlier than other 4 star hotels in the resort. Many rooms have views of the slope, the hotel is kept clean and is comfortable. Downside is that the food isn't as good as some of the other Soldeu hotels, if you eat out a lot and are visiting Andorra to ski, it's generally regarded as good.

Sport Hotel, Soldeu (3 stars)

Telephone: +376 870 600

There are three Sport hotels in Soldeu, and this is the one to miss for the moment. Perhaps the management are concentrating on the Village and Hermitage, because like skiing, it's going downhill at the moment.

Sport Village (4 stars)

With 148 rooms over 4 floors, the Sport Village Hotel has rooms overlooking the slopes and is superior to the similarly named 3 star Sport Hotel (there are 3 Sport Hotels in Soldeu, all part of the same group) and adjacent to the gondola, an ideal base for skiers.

Clean, comfortable, the only things that let the hotel down is that the quality of the food can be questionable, and during school holidays parents let their children run riot unsupervised, while they discuss the price of cappuccino in their home town at the bar. Avoid during school holidays.

Sport Hermitage, Soldeu (5 stars)

Telephone: +376 870 500

The queen bee of Soldeu hotels. 120 suites with balconies that have ski views. Superb throughout with good staff. More expensive than other Soldeu hotels and for good reason – it's better than the rest.

Hotel Princesa Park, Arinsal (4 stars)

A well known hotel in the ski resort of Arinsal, less than 200 metres from the lifts. 195 rooms over 4 floors. Facilities include a bowling alley, spa facilities and for the summer months an outdoor pool. Arinsal has the liveliest nightlife in Andorra.

Velvet Apartments, Arinsal (3 star)

A good alternative to conventional hotels in the popular ski resort of Arinsal, ten minutes walk from the ski lifts and Arinsal town centre, with one and two bedroom equipped apartments available, all with separate kitchen, lounge, bathroom and balcony with good mountain views.

Hotel Coma, Ordino (4 star)

The unfortunately named Hotel Coma is in fact one of the best and oldest hotels in Andorra, and is located in the centre of Ordino with probably the best hotel staff in Andorra. 48 rooms, summer swimming pool. Good location for skiing, pony trekking and summer mountain walking, the hotel also offers a bus service to the capital la Vella.
